THE GENEALOGY OF THE THOMAS RUSH CARSKADDEN FAMILY OF PENNSYLVANIA, OHIO AND ELSEWHERE

This book is a history and genealogy of the ancestors of Thomas Rush Carskadden, who was born in Meadville, Pennsylvania in 1883, and his wife Nancy Florence (McMullen) Carskadden, who was born in nearby Oil City in 1884. The two were married in 1910 and the couple spent most of their married lives in Marion, Ohio, where Thomas had taken a job with the Erie Railroad. This book traces Thomas Rush’s Carskadden/Carskaddon line back five generations to Revolutionary War veterans James Carskaddon Sr. and Jr. who had emigrated from Ireland and had settled along the Susquehanna River in eastern Pennsylvania by 1764. Thomas Rush Carskadden’s direct allied ancestors, members of the Lindley and Crapo families, can be traced through various surnames to Mayflower passengers William and Susanna White and George Soule. The direct Lindley and Crapo ancestors also include Revolutionary War veteran David Linsley who went missing in action at the Battle of Long Island and Consider Crapo who was at the Battle of Lexington. A direct allied line of Nancy Florence (McMullen) Carskadden of particular interest is the Renwick family from Allegany County, New York. This line includes Nancy Florence’s grandfather, Civil War veteran Captain Robert H. Renwick, who was charged with “conduct unbecoming an officer” for gambling with the enlisted men in his company. He was seriously wounded at the Battle of Fair Oaks and discharged before the court martial proceeding could be held. The book contains numerous old family photos as well as copies of deeds, wills, census records, death certificates, and other pertinent documents, including copies of official transcriptions of Revolutionary War-era documents from the Pennsylvania Archives. These will be particularly useful for anyone interested in joining the DAR or SAR through the Carskadden/Carskaddon line. Especially useful to Lindley and Crapo family descendants is a copy of the original marriage record between Orange Lindley and Minerva Crapo, which connects both families to the Mayflower. Read more
